Atie/Ebriè, Ivory Coast: Sitting female ancestor figure.

Atie/Ebriè, Ivory Coast: Sitting female ancestor figure. - Tribal Art

The Atie and the Ebriè belong to the Akan tribes of West Africa (such as the Aschanti, Agni, Baule et al.). Their sculptures depict venerable ancestors and are used in ceremonies in their honour. The present sitting female figure is made of hard, heavy wood, with a stool, carved from a single piece. The figure was originally black, the stool decorated with geometric chip-carved lines was coloured in white (kaolin). The sitting figure displays an elaborate, finely manufactured hairstyle and characteristic button and bulge shaped scarification marks to the head, neck and abdomen. With polychrome glass pearl chains on both arms, the body and legs. Some age damage with old, local original repairs: a crack to the left foot of the figure, tears to the left leg and the back of the left forearm. First half to mid-20th century; H: 65 cm. (ME)

Provenance: Belgian collection; German private collection.
