An old, rare mask representing a crocodile. Made of light-coloured wood, originally coloured black and brown. With two curved, crossed iron hooks at the crown, on the forehead three dik-dik horns carved in relief. With triangular, deep-set eyes, a large nose, narrow, semicircular 'cheeks' (the right ‘cheek’ broken and glued). The long, protruding crocodile-mouth displays 24 decorative nails made of brass in the upper section. The movable lower jaw is attached to the mask by means of strings made of plant fibre. Both rows of teeth are carved out from the same piece and coloured in white. A rare piece with partly encrusted, old patina on the outside and a shiny usage patina on the inside. Small areas of age damage. First third of the 20th century; H: 41 cm. (ME)
