Senufo, Ivory Coast, Mali Burkina Faso: A small, very finely manufactured ‘Tugubele figure’.
These figures, made of wood and dyed black, represent helpful bush spirits called 'Tugubele'. They belong to the soothsayers of the Senufo people, ‘helping’ them with their oracles and predictions. The present, standing male ‘Tugubele figure’ is very finely executed. In perfect Senufo style, with typical tribal hair, scarification marks and ornaments. With visibly old usage patina. An age-related tear on the right side of the figure’s body. Between the early of the first half of the 20th century; H: 27 cm. (ME)
