Lobi, Burkina Faso: A female figure with raised arms.
The Lobi people place these figures with raised arms in shrines or in houses in order to host and ward off invisible evil spirits (‘Thila’). With the same gesture Lobi women also dance at funerals in order to keep evil spirits away from the place of the ceremony. The present figure, also called 'Buthib kotin', is made of light-coloured hard wood of a dark brown colour. It is carefully, finely manufactured and displays a good patina with slight age damage (small loss on the right hand, small tears). First half of the 20th century; H: 30 cm. (ME)
Literature: 'Lobi' by Daniela Bognolo, ill. 27.
