Two small, old ritual figures of the Lobi.
1: A complete male figure, with cap and fine facial features. With sacrificial patina on the front, that is to say at the right place, since these ‘Bateba’ figures are placed in shrines with the front turned to the people who pay visits to them (for a more detailed explanation see cat. no. 6). A tear on the back. H: 23.2 cm.
2: Part of an originally well carved, exquisite Lobi figure (fragment). Made of light-coloured wood. With age patina but without sacrificial patina. This item was probably not a ‘Bateba’ intended for a shrine, but rather an ancestor figure, which did not receive sacrificial offerings. H: 17.7 cm. Both figures: first half of the 20th century (ME)
