West Turkestan, c. 172 x 154 cm, 17th/18th century, symmetrical knot open to the right, slightly layered, H 40, V 60 = c. 2,400 kts/sqm, the trimming of the upper section is unfortunately slanted, this large carpet belongs to the very rare group of Saryk ensis and is one of the oldest preserved specimen of this type on the grounds of its original design, the white areas in Saryk carpets are often knotted using cotton and thus gain special prominence as a result, remarkable is the intense use of dyes derived from insects as well as the end elem dyed in a strongly contrasting colour, low pile with some bare areas in the upper section, as a result of the reduction of the upper end the usually patterned gable-shaped elements are no longer recognisable, lower end cut short, large brown side edges still entirely preserved, museum-quality collector’s piece!
