China, approx. 235 x 145 cm, late 17th century, wool pile on cotton foundation, a museum-quality, peony-vine carpet with central medallion on a yellow ground, with beautiful lotus flowers and tendrils trailing along the main border, the dark-brown corroded band, which outwardly completes the carpet, is found only on very early pieces, consistent low pile with some repairs, the sides and lower finish original, the upper finish only fragmentary and largely supplemented, edge and end damage.
