for the 1914 Cologne Werkbund Exhibition, manufactured by Thonet, Vienna, oak wood elaborately carved with floral motifs and scrolls, fluted front legs, renewed upholstery and covered with Backhausen textile fabric, height approx. 93 cm, width approx. 67 cm, depth approx. 47 cm. (MHA)
“The balls carved with foliate motifs rest heavily on the far ends of the armrests. The motif of the vase of roses adorning the backrest was a characteristic formal element in the period after 1908. In 1914, identical chairs and a circular table were used to furnish the room reserved for the Österreichisches Museum at the Werkbund Exhibition in Cologne. An identical group can also be seen in a reproduction of the entrance hall of Villa Rothberger in Baden, which was built by Prutscher around 1914.” (Vera J. Behal, Möbel des Jugendstils, Sammlung des Österreichischen Museums für angewandte Kunst, Munich 1981)
