The confirmation of provenance reads:“Lieber Vinzenz! Dieses Messer gebe ich dir zu deinem 45 Geburtstag. Selbes hat dein Urgroßvater von seiner k. u. k. Hoheit Erzherzog Johann in den dreissiger Jahren zum Federschneiden bekommen, weil man damals keine Stahlfedern hatte nur mit Gansfedern schrieb. Nehme es zum Andenken von mir an, es ist, oder stellt Napoleon den ersten vor.” [Dear Vinzenz! I’m giving you this knife on your 45th birthday. Your grandfather received it from His Imperial and Royal Highness the Archduke Johann in the ‘30s to cut feathers, since back then steel pens didn’t exist and one still wrote only with actual goose quills.
