Exceptional central figure from a Mangbetu harp, Democratic Republic of Congo.
Harps were essential to the musical tradition of the Mangbetu aristocratic court. In this string instrument a delicately modeled female face is the neck of the harp. The quality of the carving is among the most refined examples of Mangbetu statuary.
