Luigi Bienaimé was an important pupil of, and later workshop director for, Bertel Thorvaldsen. From 1855, Bienaimé ran his own workshop in Florence. This bust dates to the period at the Thorvaldsen workshop, the signature ‘A. Bienaimé. F.’ is comprised of the initial ‘A’ from the Latin was of spelling of the name Luigi (lat. Aloisius), and the letter ‘F’ meaning fecit (made by). Later works were signed L. Bienaimé. F.
