Important Empire bureau,
Vienna ca. 1810/15. A mahogany-veneered softwood desk with a recessed bombé front section on pieds patins, these with fully carved sphinxes decorated in "verde antico"; the back section is of rectangular form with drawers atop, with a sliding cylinder-shaped writing section: when the writing surface is pulled out, two lateral round covers inside the desk then slide, the fitted interior is veneered in ash and comprises 8 interior drawers, as well as 4 sham drawers. The lower part of the desk contains 2 round doors with bar locks and maple veneer, as well as a hinged lid in the centre with 2 maple-veneered oak drawers. With parcel-gilt bronze mounts. Ca. 121 x 131x 58 cm. Some small wood losses or replacements, some ageing and wear. (DOC)
Witt- Dörring contrasts the present piece with an anonymous design for a double desk in a watercoloured pen drawing; the lower section is very similar to the type seen in this desk. Illustrated in "Genormte Fantasie" (Gabriele Fabiankowitsch/Christian WittDörring), p. 47, BöhlauVerlag Vienna 1996. MAK (Museum für Angewandte Kunst in Vienna), Kunstblättersammlung K. I. 7710XVIIId/I/14, III/42, III/41, III/40
