Lotto No. 237

(Milan circa 1561 - post 1627) and (Milan circa 1575 - circa 1640)
Adoration of the Magi,
oil on canvas, 175 x 384 cm, unframed

We are grateful to Filippo Maria Ferro for suggesting the attribution on the basis of a high resolution digital photograph.

Giovanni Battista and Giovanni Mauro della Rovere were known as ‘i Fiammenghini’ due to the Flemish origin of their father Riccardo who was a native of Antwerp. They worked extensively on canvas and in fresco in Lombardy, Emilia and Piedmont, almost always in collaboration.

The present painting can be compared with the frescos by the two brothers in the church of San Marco in Milan and with the works by Giovanni Mauro, such as the paintings conserved in the church of Santa Maria del Carmine in Milan. The facial type of the Virgin in the present painting is also very close to that of the Virgin in the fresco of the Adoration of the Magi, by Giovanni Mauro, in the church of San Giovanni Battista in Brenzio, near Como.
