Jacob Foppens van Es
![Jacob Foppens van Es - Dipinti antichi Jacob Foppens van Es - Dipinti antichi](/fileadmin/lot-images/38A171017/normal/jacob-foppens-van-es-460636.jpg)
(Antwerp 1596–1666)
A still life with grapes in a basket,
oil on canvas, 68.5 x 96.2 cm, framed
Provenance:
Private European collection
We are grateful to Fred Meijer for confirming the attribution on the basis of a high resolution digital photograph.
The present painting can be compared with a work by Jacop Foppens van Es sold at Sotheby’s, Amsterdam, in 2009 (5 May 2009, lot 29), which depicts the same fruit, white and blue grapes, in a basket set on a plain ledge. The exactitude in the rendering of the different elements, recorded as distinct entities on a very simple ground, is typical of the artist’s compositions.
Jacop Foppens van Es devoted himself to flower still lifes, most preferably floral garlands. In 1616-17 he became a master of the Antwerp Guild of Saint Luke. He is documented to have been in Rome in 1636.
His compositions are distinguished by sobriety of disposition, probably owed to the impact of the Haarlem school and painters like Nicolaes Gillis. Some paintings by van Es indicate the influence of Osias Beert the Elder (see: Illustrated Dictionary of 17th-Century Flemish Painters, ed. by J. de Maere/M. Wabbes, Brussels 1994).
