Two smaller watercolours with a similar scene and executed by the same artist are preserved in the collection of the Hermitage Museum. They belonged to the library of Czar Alexander II in the Winter Palace.
Joseph Fricero was married to Josephine Koberwein, an allegedly illegitimate daughter of Czar Nicholas I. In 1847, he accompanied Prince Grigory Gagarin, a painter and Orientalist, on his journey to Saint Petersburg.
