the design attributed to Ettore Sottsass or Angelo Lelli, Monza, c. 1958, marble foot, yellow and white plexiglass diffusers in the shape of UFOs, bolted at the top and bottom with conical solid brass cylinders, original brass and iron switch, inscribed Made in Italy Arredoluce Monza, height 212 cm. (DR) This lamp, which in several publications has been attributed to Ettore Sottsass and in others to Angelo Lelli, is one of the avant-garde designs from the 1950s in Italy. It radically broke with the traditional ideas of lamp design. The present example is an extremely rare original version of this lamp. During the 1980, a number of such lamps were produced as a re-edition. An example from this re-edited series is reproduced in: Ch. & P. Fiell, 1000 Lights, Cologne 2005, p. 547. The lamp published here makes a less delicate impression, and the marble foot is round, without any concave recesses; the rods holding the diffusers are black and longer, as well as larger in diameter.
