Guglielmo Ciardi
(Treviso 1842–1917 Venice)
The Grand Canal, Venice, signed, inscribed Gugo Ciardi Venezia, inscribed on the reverse no. 146, oil on panel, 34.5 x 55 cm, framed, (GG)
Provenance:
Collection of Prince Victor Gagarine (1848-1912), Rome (according to the reverse and family tradition);
European Private Collection.
A large number of Ciardi’s canvases are devoted to the Venetian landscape. He is indeed considered to be one of the finest Venetian view painters of the second half of the 19th century, continuing a long tradition dating back to the 17th century.
In the present work the artist captures the luminous effects of the sunset. The peacefulness of this view with the warm colours for which the artist is best known reflect the modern ideas of depicting Venice in the second half of the 19th century.
