tempera on woven cotton fabric, 95 x 79 cm, in mat, framed, behind glass, rather rubbed, (Hr)
This large, rare mandala is an impressive depiction of the mythical domain of the 62 divinities and Yidam Carkrasamvara and his red consort of wisdom, Vajravarahi, in the centre. The male god has four heads and twelve arms, and stands embracing his one-faced, two-armed consort on top of two vanquished spirits. If one imagines the basic structure of the mandala as a stupa seen from the side, it has a conical form made up of five rings rising from a square base with the four Vjratori. On each level, emanations of the central divinity appear in white, red and green. The pair of gods in blue and red stand on the highest level. Outside the cosmic mandala circle, one can make out eight famous cemeteries, separated by deep clefts in the rocks, through which shimmering silver rivers flow. The cemeteries show divinities of the syncretic pantheon of Nepalese Buddhism and Hinduism: gods with their prajnas, guardians, demons and yogis, who meditate before stupas and skeletons lying around. In the upper strip of the image are the two-armed Yidam Samvara (yab-yum) and other emanations of the divinity, Cakrasamvara. In the lower image strip, dakinis appears in varying iconographical colours as do Tantric gods, such as Kalacakra, Kalamanjushi, Hevajra and others.
