Saxon Court Painter, circa 1590 (Zacharias Wehme ?)
Madonna and Child,
oil on copper, 18.5 x 14.5 cm, framed
The enamel-like quality of the copper plate suggests that this painting was executed by an accomplished artist who may have trained in the Cranach workshop or in the master’s immediate circle. Thomas DaCosta Kaufmann, to whom we are grateful, has suggested a tentative attribution to Zacharias Wehme (Dresden 1550–1606). Wehme received his training in the workshop of Lucas Cranach II in Wittenberg and was active as a court painter in Dresden.
