Roger de Saint-Lary, Seigneur de Bellegarde, became Maréchal de Camp and in 1574 was appointed Maréchal de France. He was one of the most prominent favourites of King Henry III. However, the King’s mother, Catherine de Medici, distrusted him and it is believed that the gifted and ambitious Maréchal de Saint-Lary, who in 1565 had married the rich heiress Marguerite de Saluces Cardé, was poisoned by order of the Queen Mother.
