A fine old Hopi dance mask. Around 1900.
Leather, cotton and mineral pigments. 10,5 x 20 cm. This diminutive face mask was part of a much wider range of ceremonial dance accoutrements that would have included a dance kilt, a tablet, and gourd rattles. The leather used to construct these masks is almost invariably recovered from Mexican saddle elements, whilst the cotton and the coloring are of local manufacture.
