Courting Couple, Madagascar, 19th century.

Courting Couple, Madagascar, 19th century. - Tribal Art

Iron wood, 118 cm high. An archaic and beautiful example of Madagascan sculpture. This figural post would have been a corner element to an outdoor enclosure and depicts a male female couple in tender regard. The gentle touch of the hand on the breast is somehow accentuated by the advanced weathering of the surface due to years of exposure to natural elements, and the diminutive size of the male raises the status of this woman to a goddess-like level, as she sits proudly erect and her partner looks up to her. The traditional inhabitants of Madagascar carved many styles of protective outdoor posts depicting scenes of daily life, birds, zebu and combinations or abstractions of these themes. Recent examples are often heavily painted, and show the accoutrements of modern life, be it clutching a handbag or riding a motorbike.
