A very important royal Ashanti throne, Ghana, early 20th century.
Wood and brass. 74 x 79 x 45 cm. This large throne was made for the king to sanctify his position, it functioned as a reference to the 'Golden Stool' that unifies all in the kingdom, tracing back to the founding father. All stools belong to one owner. The throne absorbs the soul of the person using it, and often stools were treated as shrines at which the deceased's soul might be called.
