Djennenke figure, Mali. 11th to 14th century.
Hard wood, 59 cm. The Soninke or Djennenke left a small corpus of wooden figures. They were conserved in dry caves, far from insects and changing weather. These figures are related in style to the later Dogon sculptures. A grand single figure standing with raised arms, his posture has been interpreted as a prayer for rain but may be a reaching for the heavens in their origin myth. This masterpiece of abstract art depicts a man with an elegant elongated trunk, large eyes and the remnants of arms reaching up. His stylized beard identifies him as an elder and an individual whose age and experience give him the right to function as a mythologized ancestor. This object comes with a C14 test (CIRAM ref 1211-OA-302R).
