West China, c. 53 x 53 cm, beginning of the 19th century, part of an early bench runner with full soft pile wool and well-preserved colours, with coarse knotting due to age; although it may seem barbaric that the often 5m-long galleries should be mostly offered as trimmed pieces and more practical fragments, this is also how some at times very much sought-after collector’s pieces have been preserved without loss of detail.
