The inlaid marble mosaic floor of Siena Cathedral covers the whole ground of the church and consists of 56 panels in marble, graffito and inlaid scenes. They represent depictions from the Old Testament, sibyls, virtues, allegories and various historical motifs. Active as an architect and restorer Giovanni Battista Silvestri worked at various places including the Nuova Barriera di San Lorenzo in Siena (Gate and town walls) which was destroyed in 1930 and on the Neogothic facade of Santa Maria del Fiore, the cathedral of Florence.
