Simone Cantarini
(Pesaro 1612-1648 Verona) The ecstasy of a female saint, pen and brown ink, brown wash, on laid paper, mit watermark "duck in one-lined circle",25,6 x 14,2 cm, mounted, unframed, (Sch)
The attribution of this drawing was confirmed by Prof. Andrea Emiliani and Prof. Anna Maria Ambrosini Massari on the basis of a digital photography. Moreover, Prof. Ambrosini Massari is planning to publish the drawing in her upcoming essay on Simone Cantarini.
When drafting this sheet Cantarini may have been inspired by the painting "Saint Michelina in Ecstasy“ by Federico Barocci (Pinacoteca Vaticana, Inv. 40378), which Cantarini is supposed to have admired very much. A drawing showing a female saint in ecstasy (pen and brown ink, brown wash,25,2 x 28,3 cm) is quite similar in composition and drawing style and is kept in the Correr Museum in Venice (Inv. 1383). Another comparable drawing with the depiction of a „Holy Family“ (red chalk, pen and brown ink, 14,9 x 14 cm) is preserved in the Gabinetto Disegni e Stampe di Palazzo Rosso in Genua (Inv. 1151).
