Jacopo Palma, il Giovane
(Venice c. 1548-1628) The Finding of the Holy Cross, black and white chalk on lightbrown laid paper,16,5 x 27,8 cm, laid down on later laid paper, inscribed "Tintoretto" in pen and brown ink at lower margin, browned, somewhat stained, mounted, unframed, (Sch)
Provenance:
Private collection, Italy.
The attribution to Palma il Giovane was suggested by Prof. Michiaki Koshikawa, Tokyo University of the Arts, in a written communication on September 10, 2016. Mrs. Koshikawa intends to publish the drawing in her forthcoming monograph on the artist.
The present drawing is presumably a preliminary study for the painting „Saint Helena is finding the Holy Cross“ (c. 1620-25) by Palma il Giovane. The related painting may have been part of a series of paintings recounting the history of the Holy Cross in the Chiesa dei Crociferi (todays Jesuit church) in Venice. Another preliminary study in pen and brown ink for the painting was sold on January 8, 1991 at Sotheby's in New York. Both drawings can be ascribed to Palma il Giovani on a stylistic basis. Literature:
For comparable drawings related to the painting by Palma Giovane, see: Stefania Mason, Palma il Giovane. L'opera completa, Milano 1984, p. 126, No 426.
