Aubusson (Central France), c. 292 x 333 cm, mid-18th century, silk wool weaving after a model by David Teniers II; in the 17th and 18th centuries, pictorial carpets after Teniers enjoyed great popularity: especially sought-after were series with rural scenes, whereas subjects with harbour scenes, such as the present piece, are rare to find; visible in the foreground is a boat with passengers, crew and cargo, mooring against the harbour wall, on the horizon the bay entrance with numerous ships in choppy sea; the carpet is trimmed on both short sides and in the upper section, and was originally wider and taller; in good overall condition with numerous repairs due to age, mounted on linen on the back with attached suspension device.
