China, a) c. 22 x 22.5 cm, b) c. 21.5 x 22.5 cm, second half of the 19th century, both pieces are manufactured with silk in kesi and application technique and can be identified as the frontal insignia of rank of an officer’s robes on the basis of their two-part structure; the two items feature similar, applied phoenixes, but they differ slightly with regard to their field and border designs; since such items were always produced in pairs, the present objects belong to two separate series; they have never been worn and are thus in pristine condition, which is rare; very unusual is also the small format of the insignia, backed with regional fabric on the reverse side.
