Tibet tiger,
Tibet, c. 268 x 80 cm, about 1900, the present long format was probably manufactured as a sitting rug for a Buddhist temple, depictions of tigers and tiger skin are well known from Chinese carpets and were produced for ceremonial and religious purposes in addition to being a sign of dignity and authority, in very coarse knotting on yellow background are tiger stripes with four swastika disc medallions, it is typical for the swastika border to be restricted to the long sides, as is also the case with the present specimen, original ends on both sides with decorative fringe along the side edges, the wool foundation produces a soft smooth feel, consistently full pile, excellent condition.
