Cosmography of Sebastian Münster (1488-1552) from 1544 is the oldest German description of the world. There have been many editions in different languages, including Latin, French, Italian, English and Czech. The last German edition was published in 1628. Cosmography was one of the most successful and popular books of the 16th century. Over a period of 100 years it was published in 24 editions. This success was due to remarkable woodcuts (some of them were cut byHans Holbein Jr., Urs Graf, Hans Rudolph Manuel Deutsch and David Kandel).
