clear glass, facetted finial with dark red and gold threads, rosette, cut designs with leaf and flower tendrils, conical facetted bowl with lavish leaf and strapwork as well as shells as border, the facing side with coat of arms, panels 1+4 with lions rampant, panels 2+3 branches of roses with 3 flowers, crest with open wings and lion with rose stem, flanked by sprigs of leaves, outlined by caparisons and grotesques, with herms, flower basket as finial, the reverse side with reserve featuring Neptune and Amphitrite in a shell, pulled by two seahorses, accompanied by Nereids, playing a shell horn and violin and holding a sword, in the background 3 sail boats, surmounted by a mascaron with crown of leaves, on the side herms pouring water from vases, underneath a dragon, the base of the body with zigzagging motif and leaves, knop and stem with lozenge cut and 2 discs, plain base with matching floral and leafy tendrils and shells, height 27.8 cm, edge of lid with 3 restored areas (pasted), Silesia c. 1710 (Ru)
Neptune, the god of freshwater and the sea, is the Roman counterpart of the Greek sea god Poseidon. Amphitrite, a Greek sea goddess, was a daughter of Nereus and the Oceanid Doris, and the wife of Poseidon.
