(Bologna 1529–1592)
Ecce Homo,
oil on canvas, 66.7 x 57.4 cm, framed
We are grateful to Daniele Benati for confirming the attribution of the present painting on the basis of a digital photograph (written communication).
Together with Pellegrino Tibaldi, Passerotti was the most significant personality in Bolognese art of the late sixteenth century. He is distinguished for his particular originality and cultural versatility, which enabled him to connect mannerism and the naturalism of the Carracci.
The present painting is datable to between the 1570s and 1580s; it succeeds in suggesting a sense of compassionate humanity, which is rooted in the painting’s essentially devotional purpose, combined with striking realism. In deploying this dramatic subject Bartolomeo Passerotti further emphasised the feeling of emotional engagement, which he first experimented with in the large altarpiece showing Christ Presented to the People, made for, and still conserved in Santa Maria del Borgo, Bologna. This is one of Passerotti’s finest sacred works, and it serves as a point of comparison for the present painting.
