(The Hague 1738–1793)
Children playing on the bank of a canal,
monogrammed: KF,
oil on panel, 107 x 152 cm, framed
Karel La Fargue, coming from a family of artists from The Hague, left behind a small oeuvre comprising primarily drawings and watercolours and containing only a handful of oil paintings. This is why the present monogrammed work is an important addition to this artist’s oeuvre. The painting presents a totally unspectacular scene: people going about their work and children playing against the background of a plain Dutch architectural background. In depicting the daily routine of his contemporaries, the artist entirely abstained from idealisation or exaggeration. He thus appeared as a chronicler of his native town’s everyday life. Karel La Fargue’s brothers Isaac Lodewijk and Paulus Constantijn created similar views of towns. It can therefore be assumed that this type of vedute had become a specialty of the La Fargue family.
