Alexander Coosemans, still life and animal painter, was one of the most talented pupils of Jan Davidsz. de Heem in 1641-42. In later years he went to Rome, where he came under the influence of artists such as Mario de’ Fiori and Michelangelo da Campidoglio.
The present painting, which can be dated circa 1665, is listed in the files of the RKD, The Hague, under no. 140529.
