until 1946 in a monastery in Trier (Germany);
there acquired by a private collector;
Private collection, Rheinland-Pfalz (2015);
where acquired by the present owner
The present painting is based on a head study by Rubens, a so-called ‘tronie’ (Städel Museum, Frankfurt/Main, inv. no. 1043), which was enlarged after Rubens’s death by his workshop collaborator Jan Boeckhorst (1604–1668). By adding two slats, the picture was turned into a fully fletched composition - an entirely common workshop practice at the time (see Fokus auf Rubens und Boeckhorst, Städel Museum, Frankfurt/Main, 2007/8).
