Igdyr? Ak Yap Fragment,
West Turkestan, c. 1046 x 32.5 cm, first half of the 19th century, warp: wool, weft: wool and cotton, pile: wool and cotton, symmetrical tent strap knot on 2 to 4 warp threads; on flatwoven ivory-coloured ground, tree motifs in alternating colours with classic border frame of double “gyjak” stripes with a zigzag line in between, parts of the long sides are secured with a linen strip on the back, the kibitka band has been trimmed in the upper section and its original brocaded kilim trim has been stitched back on, its rather dark foundation suggests that this band was once in use in a yurt and was exposed to the smoke of a stove.
