Domenico Bossi was one of the greatest miniature portraitist of Neo-Classicism. He received his formation at the Academy of Fine Arts in Venice under Giandomenico Tiepolo. Between 1789 and 1853 he travelled to numerous European cities such as Hamburg, Stockholm, St. Petersburg, Paris, Venice, and Vienna. He spent the evening of his life in Munich. Bossi was highly esteemed especially in northern Europe and specialised in depictions of famous and high rank personalities of the aristocracy, the arts and the sciences and their circles. In 1824 he was appointed court painter of the Swedish King Charles XIV John. Bossi’s miniatures show an unaccustomed and unexpected realism. He produced more than 500 portraits, which are preserved in numerous private and public collections today.
