The attraction and charm of the typical Viennese courtyards remains unbroken to this day. The small oases hidden behind simple house fronts were places of communication and relaxation. People met and exchanged news or went about their daily activities. For many residents of the house, this was the centre of life or a place to escape from it.
In this lot, painter Marie Egner impressively conveys the special atmosphere of such a Viennese courtyard. The painting shows the view into the courtyard formerly at No. 8 Dreilaufergasse in the seventh district of Vienna, as also captured in an old photograph. The building was demolished at the beginning of the 1950s, and at today’s address, No. 44 Lindengasse, there is the Evangelical Church of the Resurrection, built between 1959 and 1962. Dreilaufergasse was incorporated into Lindengasse in 1909. Marie Egner presents the courtyard on a warm summer’s day, inviting the viewer to linger. In strong, warm colours, she transfers the fragrance of the blossoming lilac, the white horse-chestnut and the violet irises to the canvas. As a talented floral and landscape painter, she enchants the beholder with the skilful reproduction of the atmospheric lighting conditions and is able to portray the charm of this small oasis in the midst of Viennese residential buildings.
