Lotto No. 340

Associate of Melchior de Hondecoeter

Associate of Melchior de Hondecoeter - Dipinti antichi

(Utrecht 1636–1695 Amsterdam)
A pelican and other birds by the water,
oil on canvas, 105 x 130 cm, framed

Provenance:
Private collection, Austria;
sale, Dorotheum, Vienna, 18 October 2016, lot 281;
where acquired by the present owner

A close variant of this composition by Melchior de Hondecoeter was sold at Christie’s, London, 7 July 2016, lot 18. The present lot depicts skillfully many of the same birds portrayed by Hondecoeter, in that painting. The present painting, however, is more than an interpretation or record of the composition and technique of de Hondecoeter but exhibits innovations on the part of the artist who has added a diving bird in the background, a hoopoe upper left and adorned the foreground with a diverse trio of chicks. Hondecoeter himself frequently repeated birds almost identically from one composition to another.

Hondecoeter, whose decorative compositions were so successful that contemporaries like Jan Weenix (1640–1719) imitated his style. Adriaen de Coorte (circa 1665-after 1719), a painter of still lifes, is also known to have copied paintings by Hondecoeter, with whom he probably also collaborated for a time.
