The present lot is one of three different compositions after the subject by the artist (see op. cit. Middendorf, 1989, cat. no. 134 and 136). Hendrick Dubbels possibly made drawings after the eastern docks of Amsterdam, and his painted portrayals were noted for their accuracy, a trait also shared by the works of his tutor Simon de Vlieger.
