Pieter Mulier I

The late Jan Kelch confirmed the attribution on the basis of a photograph (private communication, 19 March 1993).
Pieter Mulier, although traditionally described as a pupil of Salomon Ruysdael, shows a close affinity with the Leiden school of marine painting, exemplified by Jan Porcellis. The present composition characteristically rides upon the rhythms of choppy waves in which small coastal crafts are shown struggling through the sea. The water reflects the delicately balanced tones of the skies above, with the white caps of the tossing waves beneath cloud banks partially caught in light. Mulier typically painted the Dutch estuaries, here with three-masted ocean-going ships and the church spire of the port-city in background adding to the carefully observed realism of the setting.
