Hieronymus Francken II
[Saleroom Notice]![Hieronymus Francken II - Dipinti antichi Hieronymus Francken II - Dipinti antichi](/fileadmin/lot-images/38A190430/normal/hieronymus-francken-ii-6154857.jpg)
(Antwerp 1578–1623)
A banquet scene,
oil on panel, 105.5 x 74 cm, framed
We are grateful to Ursula Härting for confirming the attribution of the present painting to Hieronymus Francken II (a written certificate is available).
As Hieronymus Francken died at a relatively young age only a few works by this rare master have survived. Like his younger brother, Frans Franken II, he specialised in cleverly conceived allegorical scenes that satisfied the intellectual interests of Flanders’ wealthy merchant class, his main patrons.
The present painting uses an only thinly disguised biblical topic, the parable of the prodigal son, as an excuse to portray a luxurious, decadent meal, with many symbols of underlying eroticism.
A loan request has been made for this painting for the forthcoming exhibition on the Francken Family, to be held 2020/2021 at the Musée de Flandre in Cassel, France.
