(Antwerp 1584–1669 Gand)
An equestrian portrait of Cardinal-Infant Ferdinand of Austria (1610–1641),
oil on canvas, 57 x 41 cm, framed
The Infant Don Fernando was the son of King Philip III and Archduchess Margarita of Austria and thus Philip IV’s brother. In 1619, he was appointed cardinal and between 1634 and his death in 1641, he was governor of Flanders, where he succeeded his aunt, the Archduchess Isabel Clara Eugenia. He was an able military commander and scored one of the most decisive victories for the Catholics in the 30 Years War, the battle of Nördlingen, beating the Swedish Army in 1634. He was also a patron of the arts and an avid collector, patronising Peter Paul Rubens and Caspar de Crayer, among others. Another version of this composition is in Luxemburg (65 x 46 cm, Villa Vauban).
