Lombard School, 17th Century

Lombard School, 17th Century - Dipinti antichi

Head study - Saint Paul (?),
oil on canvas, 42.5 x 34.2 cm, framed

Provenance:
De Martis collection, Genoa

This head study can be compared to works by Giovanni Battista
Crespi, called il Cerano, especially the Saint Paul in the collection
of the Raggi family of Genoa (see M. Rosci, Il Cerano, Milan 2000,
p. 219, n. 143). Crespi had a flourishing studio in which his daughter
Giulia, called ‘la Cerana’, Melchiore Gherardini and Gerolamo
Chignoli all worked (see: F. Cavalieri, in: M. Rosci (ed.), Il Cerano
1573–1632. Protagonista del Seicento lombardo, Milan 2005, pp. 33-43).

The present study appears to relate to the altarpiece of Christ
adored by Saints Peter and Paul now in the Kunsthistorisches
Museum, Vienna (274 x 184 cm, inv. no. 273) and originally located
in the church of the Ospedale dei SS. Pietro e Paolo dei Pellegrini
in Milan (see M. Rosci, Mostra del Cerano, exhibition catalogue,
introduction by A. M. Brizio, Novara 1964, pp. 113-114).
