"Samson and the lion" and "Hercules with the Nemean lion", Austro-Hungarian Empire, 18th/19th century, Loretto sandstone (the stone is a coarser variant of the Breitenbrunn limestone, from the Leitha mountains or the Loretto quarry.) Naturalistically carved. Height ca. 185 cm. Some chips on the plinth, with professionally restored breaks around the trunk, with stronger weathering especially around the head area. (MIN)
This type of sculpture was produced mostly for castle grounds and parklands. Due to the fact that the figure is not worked in the round and the back is in high relief, there is also the possibility that it was originally used in a grotto. The figure is reminiscent of well-known works in various castles such as Belvedere, Schlosshof, etc.
