Known as the First Empire period, circa 1805/10, attributed to JACOB-DESMALTER. Made in mahogany and mahogany veneer over hardwood, on plinths with recessed front angles, serpentine backrests inclined slightly backwards, with X rails, flanked by fully carved winged lions decorated in bronze. Ca. 80 x 164 x 50 cm. With various traces of ageing and wear, with old worm holes, dryness cracks, the plinth slightly warped. (DOC)

According to oral tradition, these come from the former collection of Princess Mathilde Bonaparte, daughter of Jerome Bonaparte and niece of Napoleon I. This important furniture corresponds exactly in terms of general execution to the bronze model in the Palais de Justice (in Paris). F. H. Jacob-Desmalter (1770 - 1841) was the son of Georges Jacob, a cabinet maker who produced furniture in the Louis XVI style and worked for the French Royal household. Between 1796 and 1825 he led one of the most influential and successful furniture workshops in Paris, Jacob - Desmalter et Cie.
