circa 1610-20, originally seated on volutes as part of a decorative finial of an altarpiece, carved limewood, hollowed to the reverse, later polychrome paintwork and gilding, height 135 cm, age-related damage, (MC)
The angels can be unequivocally attributed to the artistic milieu in Weilheim and they display a style of fold treatment typical of Bartholomäus Steinle. Lit.:

Provenance:
in the ownership of a family from Southern Germany since the late 19th cent. According to the inventory, they were ‘bought at Kollman’s antique dealers in Sedlingerstrasse – possibly originate from the Church of St John (Johanniskirche)’ (Munich), Illustrated in: Gerhard Schober, Frühe Villen und Landhäuser am Starnberger See, 1998, pp. 395-401, and pp. 440 and 441;
