Kitagawa Utamaro
(Japan 1753-1806) attributed to, Shunga, sheet from E-hon Komachi-biki, sheet no. 6 of twelve double-sided illustrations for a folding album featuring erotic images: ‘A courtesan and her lover against a free-standing screen (tsuitate)’, colour woodblock print, unsigned, 24.4 x 37.7 cm, centre fold, creased, later impression, faded colours, behind glass, mat, framed, (CT) This sheet belongs to the third and last of the large erotic albums by Utamaro; the first entitled ‘Utamakura’, dating from 1788, ‘Negai noito-guchi’ of 1799, and the third and last, ‘E-hon Komachibiki’. This album, produced in 1802, is considered the most sensual of the three albums (see p. 281; in: The passionate art of Kitagawa Utamaro, London 1995).
